Highlighting the timeliness of discussions on AI and blockchain, an article from TIME magazine on this topic from yesterday: What to Know About Worldcoin and the Controversy Around It | Time

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman’s Worldcoin, a cryptocurrency aiming to become the cornerstone of the global financial system and enable Web3 identity verification, made its debut in the crypto markets this year. Despite garnering over 2 million signups in mid-July, the project has faced criticism within the crypto community primarily due to concerns regarding privacy related to the use of biometric verification. Investigations revealed evidence of deceptive and exploitative practices to attract participants in countries like Indonesia, Ghana, and Chile. Moreover, the project’s collection of biometric data is under scrutiny in Europe, potentially conflicting with some countries’ privacy laws. Compounding the issues, bad actors have managed to steal login credentials, and certain Worldcoin operators have been caught selling their World IDs on the black market.

Not to overstate the obvious, but the entire spirit of crypto is anonymity. Worldcoin is asking for more personal data than any bank you would walk into off of the street. Iris scans are nothing new, but as far as I know, the scan to unlock your phone uses data that resides only on the device itself. How long before our biometric data is in the cloud, to be bought and sold like our clicking habits?

Fair points, @DarcyAdvisors. In my view, more important than the anonymity question is the decentralization question. While iris scans are nothing new (as you mention), the idea of centralizing millions upon millions of biometric data entries in the cloud opens up a Pandora’s box of security and privacy issues – especially when the company in question is still a startup. The possibility of our biometric data becoming a tradeable asset, akin to our browsing habits, is indeed a concerning prospect. I would like to understand Worldcoin’s architecture better, but from what I can see the centralization of personal data smacks more of Web2 than Web3.

To your point @David-CKC-Fund I have a crypto trading account. It is one of the major apps that is really easy to use. It connects to my normal bank account, etc.

I’ve bought and sold a little, mostly out of curiosity, and I find it kind of fun, but have often wondered why crypto is purported to be so anonymous and decentralized, when the app knows everything about me. They do all kinds of “know your customer” compliance. Actually they do more than my bank. Not sure what I’m missing.

Good points @Nancy_Muellerhof. The whole “crypto seems anonymous but trading apps want my life story” thing is kind of like this: Cryptocurrencies are designed to be somewhat private and not controlled by any big boss. But when you use apps to trade them, these apps have to follow rules set by the government. These rules are there to stop bad stuff like money laundering and fraud. So, the apps ask for your info to make sure you’re not up to anything sketchy.

Basically, even though cryptocurrencies can be secretive and free from one ruler, trading apps have to play by the rules of the real world. That’s why they ask for a lot of info, which might seem a bit much compared to what you’d expect from crypto. It’s like a balance between being sneaky online and following the law.

So, the seeming contradiction you’re noticing is like a clash between the cool secretive vibe of crypto and the real-world need to follow rules and keep things secure in the money world.
